Jackalope Jump Saturday

If you happen to drive past the high school on Saturday afternoon and see a bunch of folks in silly costumes, be sure to stop and check it out, its just the annual Jackalope Jump to benefit Special Olympics.

Sponsored by the high school cheer squad, this is the only fundraiser Special Olympics has for the year to help with travel, uniforms and meals for their athletes.

Coach Tom Olsen and his wife Lauri oversee the program, taking the athletes to area games in the spring, winter and summer, along with the State Games, approximately eight trips each year.

Athletes compete in a variety of events like swimming, bowling, golf, snow shoeing, track and basketball. When they travel, there are anywhere from five to seven athletes that go on the trip.

For the Jackalope Jump, the fire department fills a large tank and not only the athletes or anyone who would like to donate to the cause, take the plunge into the icy water. You don’t have to jump if you donate, but that just adds to the fun.

The athletes are going around soliciting donations, but if you show up on Saturday during the Jump you may donate then as well.

“You don’t have to jump,” Olsen said, “just show up and donate. Our local merchants have been exceptional with their donations, but every dollar counts for these kids.”

If you would like to make a donation or have questions about Special Olympics, please call either Lauri Olsen at 921-0807 or Tom Olsen at 921-0730.
