TMS tops seven teams to win Challenge of the Books

Thermopolis Middle School came out on top in the Challenge of the Books held at the armory last week, competing against seven teams, to take first place.

Begun in 2004, schools from around the Big Horn Basin compete against each other in a question and answer forum for six rounds. Points are calculated for correct answers as well as answers your team could answer correctly when your opponent could not.

Questions come from a list of 12 books selected from the Soaring Eagle and Indian Paintbrush lists each year and teams begin reading and discussing the books in September in preparation for the January competition.

"The 2018 team did an amazing job," said TMS Language Arts Teacher and coach, Kristin Ryan. "Each were dedicated to reading as many of the books as they could along with memorizing all authors and titles prior to the competition.

"They were team players and models of good sportsmanship. Leadership duties were shared throughout the competition among the seven students. They were overjoyed to bring home first place and the traveling trophy to TMS."

Other teams included Greybull, Lovell, Powell, Worland, Cloud Peak and Burlington with Lovell taking second and Powell coming in third.

The last time the team place first was over a decade ago, in 2006.

Member of the team included sixth graders Julia Quintanilla, Brianna Lackey, Elizabeth Peterson and Claire Simpson; seventh grader Owen McCumber and eighth graders Jacob Randall and Jean-Luc Wilson.

Coaches were Ryan along with Eric Kay and Jacob Strenger.
