Lady Cats at home Friday, Saturday

It was something of an up and down weekend for Lady Cats volleyball as they hosted their home tournament last Friday and Saturday.

The girls looked great during pool play on Friday, going 4-4 to end up seeded fourth in the Silver bracket.

Friday afternoon they went 0-2 against Big Piney (20-21; 13-21), 0-2 playing Wind River (15-21; 10-21), then 2-0 against Rocky Mountain (21-14; 21-14) and 2-0 against Riverside (21-10; 21-20).

Saturday began with play against first seeded Big Piney.

"We did not play well the first game, losing 7-25," said head coach Shannon Hill, "but in the second game I was proud of my girls for not giving up and coming back from an 18-24 deficit to tying the game, 24-24.

"We ended up losing 26-24, however this team proved to themselves that their potential is there, it just depends on when they choose to let it shine through."

Hill added that the team's six-point run proved her saying, "focus on every single point as if it is the last point in the match." She said when they put that into action, the team is capable of great things.

She said the hitters stepped up and made some big plays.

Emmie Coyne had some great overpass kills and Mary Ryan and Sesi Jensen were smart with their hitting.

Kelly Johnson made some crucial plays at the net with blocking and Haley McDermott was serving those points and really focused on making her serves and playing great defense.

Alex Russell had most of her digs in the second game, so that played a role in the point run as well.

The JV team went 6-2 for the weekend.

They swept Riverside and Big Piney, then split with Wyoming Indian and Wind River.

"The girls played really well overall," coach Cortney O'Connor said. "Its exciting to see improvement on the things we spent time working on during the week in practice."

As a team, O'Connor said the girls had nine aces against Riverside and five against Wind River.

"We are looking forward to starting conference play this week," she said.

The varsity ladies have two home matches this week, against Wheatland on Friday and then they face Torrington on Saturday.
