Cancer crusaders plan fundraiser

What would you do if you knew there was something that affected 1.6 million new people every year? What would you do if you knew 595,690 of those people affected would die?

A new organization in Thermopolis is stepping up to make a difference locally, the T-Town Cancer Crusaders.

The non-profit organization’s goal is to assist local cancer patients with travel expenses when they must leave town for specialty oncology services.

All of the team members have lost family or friends to cancer and understand the financial burdens of traveling for care.

Many times, a patient needs surgery or specialty oncology at a moments notice and that’s where the T-Town Cancer Crusaders will come to the rescue. Their goal is to get them money quickly to help with fuel expenses, hotel rooms and meals.

The group will have a nomination process to help the team select those families with the greatest need so they can get the funds more quickly.

“I started T-Town Cancer Crusaders as a way to pay it forward to the community for the support they have shown me during my five year cancer battle,” said Connie Hoffman. “The Ferree family donated a hog to be raffled off to raise funds when I had my stem cell transplant in 2012, which required a three month stay in Houston at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

“We have succeeded if we can help someone battling cancer focus on their health instead of stressing about finances.”

The Crusaders’ first fundraiser will be a homemade brunch and silent auction on Saturday, June 24, from 10:30 a.m. til noon. It will be held at St. Francis Parish Hall and seating will be limited so they encourage folks to get their tickets early.

“Our cooks are some of the best in the county,” Hoffman said. “Many of them are country women with years of experience cooking big meals for brandings, like Barbara Campbell, Betty Martinez, Dixie Lake, Barbara Webber, Kathy Wallingford and Carolyn Conner.”

To purchase tickets, make a donation or for more information, please contact Hoffman at 921-9463.
