Home track meet sees strong performances

There were a few more personal records than usual set by the high school track team at the Bobcat Invite on Friday, according to Coach Ernie Mecca. The Bobcats saw another 12 for the girls and seven for the boys. Mecca noted the records are due to having such a young, inexperienced team.

Makayla George had her best meet of the season, Mecca said. She came away the high scorer with 15 points, and personal records in the triple jump with a fourth place finish of 32'0.25", and in the 200 meters with a seventh place time of 27.90. She also finished second in the high jump at 4'9".

Mecca noted there were only two boys who scored points, but noted they are a small, inexperienced team.

Mecca expressed his appreciation to the volunteer workers, both in school and out, who helped make not only the Bobcat Invite possible, but also the middle school conference meet held at Thermopolis on Saturday. Mecca said there were over 500 high school athletes from 20 schools competing Friday, and 646 middle school students Saturday.

Thermopolis will again be home to competition this weekend, as host for the 3A East Regional meet. The two-day event begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Mecca said this is a Wyoming High School Activities Association culminating event, so there will be admission fees per day, $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Mecca said the regionals are a big deal, and they are looking to get students qualified for state competition.
