Catch the spirit

Wow. If I could use one word to sum up the energy with regard to the Hot Springs County School District this past week, I don’t think I could do it. I’d have to try to combine a few to try and come up with something like “excitatistical” or “senstanding.”

Though Homecoming Week is reason enough to get the spirit pumping. These dress-up days are a hoot, and I applaud some of the outrageous outfits worn not only by the students, but staff as well — Punk Day was more like “Flashback Day” for me — and the efforts shown by the cross country, volleyball and football teams got things going last week.

This week I also watched the first Powder Puff football game I’d seen in a long time. The intensity on that field was pretty tangible, as student coaches screamed out plays from the sidelines — when they managed to stay on them — observers called play by play action on live feeds via cell phone and the usual rules and playbooks were tossed aside as classes went head to head into the evening. I know it’s only flag football, but they might consider allowing the girls to wear pads and go full-on contact next year, as a lot of the plays wound up that way.

So, for those who are out there competing, whether it be at a golf course, gymnasium or stadium, thanks for helping me catch some of that Homecoming spirit this week. For those who haven’t felt like participating in the dress up days or other activities, I encourage you to take these last couple days to get into the spirit and make some memories. Let’s make the rest of the week just as excitastiscal, and Go Cats!
