Jump on the Homecoming band wagon

This is my favorite time of the year. Autumn, with warm days, cool nights and the smell of leaves changing color in the air. It means football and bonfires, pumpkin spice everything, and Homecoming.

Next week the Bobcats will celebrate another Homecoming with dress-up days, Powder Puff football, dodgeball and a parade. The band will take to the streets to learn how to march. Windows throughout downtown will be decorated in purple and gold, and spirits will be high.

I remember the excitement of Homecoming when I was in high school. Who would be Homecoming Queen? Would we win the game? Would the weather hold so we could do our town-wide pep assembly at the flagpole, complete with burning effigy of whichever team we planned on stomping?

That’s the thing I remember most fondly. Everyone in town would gather at the flagpole. The band would be playing the school song and all the classes would come running from the high school in a “snake dance”. The cheer leaders cheered, the football coach commended the players, everyone in purple and gold scarves and hats.

The awesome thing is, these kids are creating their own Homecoming memories, right before our eyes. They aren’t going to remember stuffing napkins through chicken wire every night for a week to create a float, but they’re going to remember cheering the boys on playing Buff Puff volleyball and how much fun the air band competition was.

So let’s help them with those memories, shall we? Let’s decorate our windows, wave to the band as they go by and above all, get out there and support our Bobcats!
