Matilda Schaff

Matilda Opal Schaff, 95, passed away Friday, February 26, 2016, at the Thermopolis Rehabilitation and Care Center. 

 Born in 1921 in Havelock, N. D., she was the 12th of 16 children born to Raphael and Rose (Hegal) Daum who had immigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine, Russia. At the age of six the farming family moved to Edgar, Mont., where they worked sugar beets in the Fromberg, Silicia and Edgar area.

 In 1939 Matilda married Victor George Schaff in Bowman, N.D. They moved to Laurel, Mont., in 1944 and to Thermopolis, Wyo., in 1946. Matilda, in addition to caring for her family, cleaned homes, worked at Mills Cleaners & Laundry and worked at the Senior Citizens in the kitchen. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and was active on the Council of Catholic Women. Her interests were reading and working crossword puzzles.

 She is survived by her daughters, Bernadine (Bob) Blacketer of Thermopolis, and Carole (Lee) Martinez of Kaycee, Wyo .; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great, great-grandchildren; and sister, Barbara of Bowman, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor; parents; daughter, Peggy Shaffer; and grandson, Kyle.  

Cremation has taken place. A Parish Vigil will be Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Church with Father Hugo Blotsky, O.S.B. officiating. A private Memorial and Burial Service will be held later. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Church, P.O. Box 272 or Senior. Citizens Center, 206 Senior.Ave.,Thermopolis, 82443.
