The bills are easily identified through Chinese characters located on the front and back sides of the bills, as well as pattern of black double lines in the corner. There may also be previous counterfeiting check marks on the bills. The fake money is actually used by Chinese banks to train their tellers... Full story

  • One cited in compliance checks

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Nov 23, 2017

Recently, compliance checks were done at businesses that serve alcohol in the county and East Thermopolis. Though the full data has not been received, preliminary information shows that at least one subject was cited for selling alcohol to a minor. In compliance checks, the subjects are cited, not the business, though the business is also reprimanded. Times when compliance checks are done varies, but are usually done at least once per year by someone who looks to be of age to buy alcohol but is...

  • Kay Bjorklund reflects

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Nov 23, 2017

One of the first things one might notice upon visiting Kay Bjorklund's residence at the Pioneer Home is the abundance of pictures decorating her walls. Some are framed, while others are stuck up with pins or leaning against stands on desks. Above her bed is mounted a quilt with screen printings worked into the design. But, with three children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, it's easy to see how she would have plenty to put up. Born and raised in Newcastle, she graduated high sch...

  • Songs bring back memories

    Rex Clothier|Nov 23, 2017

The other day while working out, my attention was suddenly focused on an oldie/goldie, “Donna”, that brought into my memory the picture of a lowly junior boy falling in love for the first time with a popular senior girl who miraculously made a place in her heart for him - me - if only temporarily. It’s strange how things were going on in the world that were even more important than that cataclysmic event. For example, at the same time there was a leader coming to the fore that was in the process of beginning the battle to overthrow an autho...

  • Be thankful on Thanksgiving

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Nov 23, 2017

There are certain times of the year when one reflects on the past, and for me, Thanksgiving is one of those times. I remember, as a kid growing up in Thermopolis, that our house was where the whole family gathered for dinner. Aunts, uncles and cousins, my grandparents and my mother and I, all sitting together in the dining room, spilling over into the living room. Grandma was always up at the crack of dawn making her homemade dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls and getting the big bird in the oven....

I hope you are proud of yourself....

I would like to take a moment to thank the Middle School student council for the wonderful program for Veterans Day. I really appreciate the effort everyone made to put it on and thank you to the school district for letting it happen. There were a lot of people there, but I would like to see even more civilians come and participate. We need to give these kids a lot of credit. They are a lot smarter than we think they are. They deserve thanks for putting so much effort into this. Thank you also to the ladies for the beautiful quilts. I love...
