Hot Springs County High School's FFA program recently attended their State event in Cheyenne. One of the highlights of the trip was the "booth contest" which the team won through a combination of excellent presentation and a little help from hand-held technology. FFA member Jeffrey VanAntwerp created a Wyoming trivia quiz with an interactive program that was then plugged into a TV in the booth. Members of the Thermopolis Lions Club are working round the clock with the Easter Bunny to get prepared for their annual Easter Egg Hunt in Hot Springs State Park. Regarding the “Our View” published in the April 6, 2017 edition of the IR on the opinion page, anyone who thinks the “sales tax” might continue indefinitely is in need of a refresher course. The “sales tax” is in fact a Special Purpose Tax and by definition is put in place after approval by the voters to raise monies for a “Special Purpose”, in this case the remodeling and replacement of the hospital. Tuesday morning at the Hot Springs County Museum, University of Wyoming President Laurie Nichols visited with residents of Thermopolis and Hot Springs County. The 25th annual Hot Spot Car Rally is quickly approaching. As always, the event is planned for Father’s Day weekend, June 17 and 18 this year. However, in the weekends leading up to the main event, the public is invited to bring their rides out for some evening “cruise-in” events. The first cruise is April 21. Ralph Witters Elementary will host its Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2017-18 school year on Thursday, April 20 from 5-7 p.m. at the school library. To be eligible for kindergarten, students must be five years old by Sept. 15, 2017. Those who are bringing children to register are asked to have an immunization record and a state-certified birth certificate. Spring golf got underway this past weekend at the Bobcats traveled to Sheridan to participate in a match-play tournament. Coach Jacob Smith said it was a nice change of pace from the constant stroke play tournaments. With it being spring break and many athletes out of town, Smith was only able to take four golfers, Hudson Roling, Caleb DeCroo, Jaxon Davis and Cade McLean. Dorothy Rhodes hands out a wristband to one of the attendees of a cookie jar auction to benefit her son Harley, who is suffering from stage 2 osteosarcoma cancer in his left leg. Harley's father, Ross, expressed his appreciation to everyone who helped put the event on. There is no change in the snowmelt runoff forecast for Boysen Reservoir between March and April. Mahonri Williams, the resources management division chief for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Wyoming area office noted the April through June runoff prediction is still 1,100,000 acre-feet (af), which is 200 percent of the 30-year averaged of 540,000 af.
