    In 1916, a suspension bridge was built across the Bighorn River in Hot Springs State Park. Commonly referred to as “The Swinging Bridge,” it will get a new look for the evening hours in celebration of its 100 years. Park Superintendent Kevin Skates said the Kiwanis discussed the idea of putting lights on the bridge, and partnered with the Hot Springs County Historical Society, park staff and the Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce to turn the idea into reality.     Tuesday evening, the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital (HSCMH) Board approved resolutions regarding a Specific Purpose Sales and Use Excise Tax and formation of the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital District. The Specific Purpose Sales and Use Excise Tax is a one percent tax that would be a source of funding for renovation, construction, expansion, remodeling, furnishing and equipping of HSCMH.     The Hot Springs County unemployment rate for the month of February was 5.6 percent, only .1 percent down from January’s percentage of 5.7. February 2015, however, had an unemployment rate of only 4.4 percent. The statewide decline in the oil, coal and natural gas industry is affecting a number of companies.     Relay for Life of Hot Springs County will host the first ever Drift and Drive Tournament, in memory of Helen Davis and Eddie Brister April 30-May 1. The tourney allows for two-person teams made up of two adults, two children or one of each. However, the top prize of $1,500 and runner up of $500 are only available to teams of adults. This has included our local doctors, Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital, Home Health Care, EMS and Gottsche for home physical therapy. We would have to say that “better care” anywhere in the country would be hard to find. Everyone involved in the medical field, from support services to doctors and nurses, have gone way beyond what is expected. Most of us don’t really know what we have until we need it.     Shirley Longwell, 81, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016, in Thermopolis following a brief illness. Born June 30, 1934, in Thermopolis, she was the daughter of Adam and Margaret (Walker) Strausner. She graduated from Thermopolis High School in 1952. In 1954 she married Ernest William Bent, Jr. and they had three children together, Mike, Pat and Joanna. The couple later divorced.     Floyd Benjamin French, 91, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Thermopolis Rehabilitation and Care Center after a period of declining health. He was born August 19, 1924, in Mountain Grove, Mo., to Roy and Ruth (Barber) French. He grew up on a farm in northeast Colorado. After serving in the US Army at the end of WWII, Floyd returned to farming. On June 12, 1949, he married Letamae Adkisson in Lincoln, Neb.     Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital recently upgraded its magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capabilities, and though the system is not yet usable for patients it certainly means a lot in terms of the hospital's ability to serve the community.
