  • Only 35 days until spring

    Jan 25, 2018

The beautiful white snow we looked so forward to in December in anticipation of a visit from Santa has now turned into the gray, frozen, muddy icky-ness of January. For the most part, roads in town are pretty clear with a few exceptions here and there, thanks in a big part to our Town crews out there taking care of things. They are definitely out there early in the morning as we at the Independent Record see them trying to get the south side of the downtown area cleared up as we’re coming to work each day. Mother Nature has had her hand in i...

  • Defending the U.S. Constitution

    James Bennett|Jan 25, 2018

I would like to say, in defense of the U.S. Constitution, the Good Book says the lion will eat grass like the lamb, but it will not happen in this life as we know it. When the lion takes the notion he will eat the lamb. So any quality of life in the future of the lambs was to form a government that is strong enough to hold back the actions of the lions of the world. That is what was done when the founding fathers drew up the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution which gave citizenship to all of us. I would much rather be a...

  • The Templar of teeth

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Jan 25, 2018

As any parent knows, one of the responsibilities that comes with having children is making sure visits from the Tooth Fairy happen. That little pixie had already visited my five-year-old twice, but I guess he wanted another chance to try and spot her so after a bit of amateur dental surgery he successfully removed his latest loose tooth. Now, in the past, the Tooth Fairy has left coins, but this time she decided to go with paper money. She didn’t know Mike is a big fan of shows and movies w...

We are fortunate to report that as of Tuesday, there have been a total of six cases in Hot Springs County over the last two weeks, none of which have been severe enough to be life threatening or require hospitilization, according to Red Rock Family Practice. Of course, this is probably just the starting edge of the flu season here, so it is a good idea to...

  • Water line project bidding process

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Jan 25, 2018

Last Thursday, several vehicles were parked in the 400 block of Broadway, their occupants in Thermopolis Town Hall for a pre-bid meeting regarding the water line replacement project. Town Engineer Anthony Barnett explained the project had to be advertised to meet the funding agency requirements, and the pre-bid meeting was mandatory so people know what they’re dealing with as this is not a typical water line replacement. The project deals primarily with transmission lines to the water tanks. T...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 25, 2018

It was a mixed bag for the Lady Bobcat basketball team last week as they topped the Lady Warriors from Worland on Thursday in a nail biter, 53-48, then lost to the Buffalo Lady Buffs on Friday 75-37. Head coach Cory Sova said the Worland game was a great confidence booster for the girls. Coach Kevin Gerber said of the Worland game, "It was a very winnable game for us, one that I think the boys had in their mind that we could compete and win." Though they played flat in the first quarter, the Bobcats kept up with the Warriors, scoring 13 to Worland's 16. Gerber said one...

  • Wrestlers host quad Thursday

    Rex Clothier|Jan 25, 2018

Rarely does one see the kind of domination seen at the Lander Invitational Class 3A tournament. Adding the second place Worland and third place Lander points together would total exactly 8 points more than leader Star Valley's total of 257.5 with 14 wrestlers placing in the top six. Some observers opined that this may be the best team in the state regardless of class. The upcoming Ron Thon will clarify that. Seven Bobcats scored a total 62 points, in 15th place ahead of Rawlins and behind...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 25, 2018

The Thermopolis Lady Cat JV basketball team met Worland and Buffalo this past weekend while the “froshmore” (freshman-sophomore mixed) team took on Buffalo. The JV game against Worland was a tough loss (36-22) at home. Coach Katie Despain said it was a learning game for the girls as they only scored five total points in the first half, but rebounded to score 17 in the third. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Warriors as the Lady Cats were scoreless in the fourth quart...

  • Turnovers an issue for JV

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Jan 25, 2018

Last week, the Thermopolis boys JV basketball team had a rough time with a 58-40 loss to Worland and a 54-29 lost to Buffalo. Coach Ryan Shaffer noted the boys again “gave up a quarter” in the second, as Worland outscored us 21-10. “When you lose by 18,” he said, giving up 11 in one quarter is pretty tough.” Other factors include missed free throws to keep a win within reach. Down by 15 at the half, Shaffer said the team couldn’t really recover. The boys played much better in the second half, he...
