  • The impact of disaster

    Rex Clothier|Oct 18, 2018

I just completed watching the first episode of Ken Burns’ “Dust Bowl” which was originally aired on PBS several years ago. It had a special meaning for me since both my parents were “Kansas kids” whose lives were forever impacted by what some ecologists call the greatest ecological disaster ever on the North American continent. Memories of Mom’s response to questions about the “dusty bowl” as I called it were mostly confined to “It was just something that happened before you were born.” As the years passed, I discovered there were a lot of thin...

  • The measure of a man

    Rex Clothier|Sep 6, 2018

A poem I once read and taught from spoke to the heart about a trip by the poet to the home of his youth. In it he spoke of how much smaller than his memories were the realities of the mountains, now barely hills, the river, now barely a creek, and the schools which seemed so large as he started his education, and now seemed so small as he returned from the city in which his life now unfolded. In celebration of last Memorial Day, my spouse and I drove to Torrington to visit Mom and Dad’s grave. I think of my parents often, and their r...

  • Strong memories of soap

    Rex Clothier|Aug 2, 2018

While watching an old rerun of a late 50’s TV show, I happened upon an old commercial about a soap product that was 99 & 44/100 percent pure. (I always wondered what that .56 percent impurity was and why if it could be measured. Why it couldn’t be removed to reach the totally pure mark?) My memory took me back about 70 years to my last meeting with that particular product. The event started with the words, “I didn’t . . . “ and things went sharply downhill from there to the point that “pure “ had nothing to do with taste. Polite society today...

  • Important life lessons

    Rex Clothier|Jun 14, 2018

Some time ago, I was surprised by a question from a young friend (actually a teenager): What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the loooong life you’ve lived? Before I considered the question, I informed my young friend that long had only four letters and none were to be stressed. Only then did I wonder at the nature of the question from one so young. I’ve spent the largest part of my life dealing with the young, and I couldn’t remember ever being queried in such a serious manner by one so young. Frankly, I was at a loss for a moment...

  • A word about community support

    Rex Clothier|May 17, 2018

Sixty years ago (Oh my gosh, can it be that long ago?), Cody hosted Torrington in the state championship 3A football game in a November blizzard, 38” deep snow and 10 degree temperature. Most who braved the conditions have ever after described the conditions as the worst ever for a championship game. As a Blazer, I was doubly miserable because though we had the better team, the conditions took us out of our game. There were a total of two passes thrown that day...both incomplete. The canyon was closed and we spent a miserable night in Thermopol...

  • Pondering the big questions

    Rex Clothier|Apr 12, 2018

Occasionally thoughts more profound than, “What’s for dinner?” and “Are you washing clothes tomorrow?” cross my mind. I visualize happenings such as running into an acquaintance who asks, “What do you think about eternity?” or “What are we going to do about the at-risk dams around the country?” It’s at times like these that I remove my glasses, making sure I point at least one bow at the person who would dare ask such a question on a nice spring day, and reply, “Now there’s a question for one to ponder.” I do that in hopes that by the time I...

  • The significance of Easter

    Rex Clothier|Mar 29, 2018

After asking around amongst friends and acquaintances, it appears that April 1st is not a common or even uncommon date upon which to celebrate Easter. The irony of having the greatest day of Christianity on April Fools Day is not lost on skeptics who take great pleasure in pointing out that irony to the discomfort to those of us who value to the utmost the person and position of Jesus Christ. Churches around the world will be crowded, though less so than I remember as a child, with "once a year" visitors who recognize the preeminence of the cen...

  • Forgiving and forgetting

    Rex Clothier|Mar 15, 2018

I was thinking the other day about a certain family member with whom the scales are decidedly out of balance to the tune of thousands of dollars in his favor. It’s been more than a year since I last saw him even though he has been in this locale several times during that period of time. Occasionally his image pops up in my consciousness, and negative thoughts fill my mind of what I’d like to say to him. Then a strange realization creeps in under the blackness of that bitterness, and the question arises — Do you think he’s giving you a thought...

  • Bobcat wrestlers honored at end of season banquet

    Rex Clothier|Mar 8, 2018

The state tourney brought the end of Coach C.J. Scholl's fourth season at HSCHS. "We made some real progress this year. The team went from one state placer last year (Cullen Becher), to four this year, and our points total nearly doubled. For the smallest 3A school in the state, that's not bad." He continued, "There will be a hole where the four seniors were; their leadership and work ethic will be missed, but there are some good young wrestlers coming along to replace them." Tuesday at the end...

  • Eleven Bobcats wrestle at state

    Rex Clothier|Mar 1, 2018

Thermopolis sent eleven wrestlers to the 3A State Tournament in Casper, but after the first round of matches, only two remained in the championship brackets, junior Austin Ireland and freshman Logan Cole. Several came close. Jon Harvey was well ahead when a weak move opened the door for his opponent to turn him to his back for the pin. The Bobcats' only state placer from last year's state tourney, Cullen Becher, had mounted a strong comeback after being down by several points and gained control of his opponents legs on a "double leg shot" at a...

  • Wrestlers perform well at tourney

    Rex Clothier|Mar 1, 2018

The Thermopolis Wrestling Club saw competition this past week at the North Big Horn Folkstyle Tournament. There was no team score available. In PeeWee, Raylan Rankin placed fourth in Division 49. In Bantam, Garret White placed first in Division 45 and Jackson Skelton placed first in Division 49. In Intermediate, Lilly Quintanilla placed first in Division 49-53, and Cannon Boren placed third in Division 77 and first in Division 84. In Novice, Brody Potter placed second in Division 98-117 The club...

  • Bobcats compete at 3A East Regional Wrestling Tournament

    Rex Clothier|Feb 22, 2018

Bobcat wrestlers competed at the 3A East Regional competition in Worland last Friday and Saturday. While an encouraging eleven Bobcats will be on their way to the Casper Events Center and state tourney on Friday, only four Bobcats - Austin Ireland (champion at 106 lb.), Logan Cole (third at 182 lb.) Austin Weaver (second at 195 lb.) and Hyrum Rich (third at 195 lb.) - are going with credentials that earn them seeding consideration. Ireland has the second seed at 106, and Weaver secured a fourth...

  • The best of our human emotions

    Rex Clothier|Feb 15, 2018

“The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise,” Socrates more than 400 B.C Through the kindness of many coaches and administrators, I have been allowed the privilege of associating with a group of HSCHS athletes who subject themselves to a most vigorous conditioning regimen the likes of which I don’t remember from my own athletic experience at their age. Their practice sessions range from an hour to nearly two hours some days; they start at 4...

  • Busy week for wrestling

    Rex Clothier|Feb 15, 2018

In one of the busiest weeks of the year for the Bobcats, they faced Lovell and Worland on their Senior Night at home Thursday, and then on a snowy, windy day journeyed to Glenrock to face arguably the best two 2A teams in the state. With 24 points in forfeits added to their total against Lovell, Thermopolis won on the mat too for a 52-16 victory before facing Worland in a surprisingly close and interesting match, this time forfeiting 18 points to Worland's total and wrestling them nearly even... Full story

  • Wrestlers host triangular Thursday

    Rex Clothier|Feb 8, 2018

The Greybull Invitational eleven-team tournament included super 2A power Moorcroft who ran away from everyone with a 250 point total, more than 100 points more than second place Cody followed by Lovell, Powell and a tie with Lander and the Bobcats at 107 points. This tourney presented a special challenge to the Bobcat mat men. Health conditions eliminated two productive members of their lineup, and the question was who would step up to fill their roles as team point earners. The answer to that... Full story

  • Wrestlers battle at Ron Thon

    Rex Clothier|Feb 1, 2018

A busy week saw the Bobcat wrestlers entertain the Buffalo Bison at home Thursday in a dual that wasn't that entertaining for the Bobcats. Bright spots were provided for the home fans by the return to action of Cullen Becher and the continued improvement of Chase White. Becher used an impressive double leg takedown in a first period pin of his opponent while White overpowered his Bison foe also in the first period with a 1:34 pin. The 45-30 loss was made respectable more by the forfeits given...

  • Wrestlers host quad Thursday

    Rex Clothier|Jan 25, 2018

Rarely does one see the kind of domination seen at the Lander Invitational Class 3A tournament. Adding the second place Worland and third place Lander points together would total exactly 8 points more than leader Star Valley's total of 257.5 with 14 wrestlers placing in the top six. Some observers opined that this may be the best team in the state regardless of class. The upcoming Ron Thon will clarify that. Seven Bobcats scored a total 62 points, in 15th place ahead of Rawlins and behind... Full story

  • Wrestlers show strong individual performances

    Rex Clothier|Jan 18, 2018

At midweek before his Bobcat wrestlers journeyed to Pavillion for the Don Runner Memorial, Coach C.J. Scholl took time to caution his team in a no uncertain manner that if they thought they were going to have an easy time of it because it was primarily a 2A tournament, they'd better think again. By the time they thought again, they found themselves in the middle of the pack, finishing seventh of the 18 entries. Roosevelt, Utah, Cokeville, and Big Piney finished as the top three, with the only...

  • Wrestlers finish strong at tourney

    Rex Clothier|Jan 11, 2018

On Jan. 5 and 6, the Bobcat wrestlers competed in the tough Shane Shatto Memorial tournament with 25 other teams in Douglas. Finishing 15th with a respectable 61.0 points, Thermopolis wrestlers recorded wins by every Bobcat entered in the varsity brackets. Three Bobcats, Cullen Becher (4th), Austin Ireland (6th), and Logan Cole (6th), proved they could compete at the highest level with wrestlers from all classes and three states Six Bobcats wrestled 33 matches in the varsity brackets and ended up with 21 victories (which included six pins) for...

  • Wrestlers win at Worland

    Rex Clothier|Dec 21, 2017

Christmas came early for the Bobcat wrestlers this year at Worland's "Battle in the Big Horns" tournament when they won their way to the Silver Bracket Championship with three dual victories on Saturday after Friday's tough bracket draws against powerhouses Douglas and Sheridan. This was a great finish for the week which started with a thrashing of Greybull on Thursday who could only furnish enough varsity wrestlers for six matches, and lost four of those. A Bobcat that had a memorable night...

  • Wrestlers bring home wins

    Rex Clothier|Dec 14, 2017

Bobcat wrestlers journeyed to Powell for their first competition of the season with a lot of questions to be answered. This young team answered them in the most positive way possible. With some 22 teams competing, they brought home two varsity championships and one JV championship, they amassed 32 victories out of 54 matches with 32 of those wins by way of pins, and they became a team supporting each other in this most individual sport of all. Two years ago, junior Austin Ireland competed at... Full story

  • Wrestlers prepare

    Rex Clothier|Dec 7, 2017

For the first time in many years the 2017-18 Bobcat wrestlers enter a season with a balanced collection of athletes from the four years of HSCHS. Seniors Cullen Becher, Koy Myers, Austin Weaver and Andrew Yarbrough will lead this edition of the Bobcats into a year filled with both promise and challenges. Juniors Jeffrey VanAntwerp, Jonathan Harvey, Austin Ireland and Chase White bring to the team a solid year of seasoning and look to be a force to be reckoned with by the end of the season going... Full story

  • Community attitude

    Rex Clothier|Nov 30, 2017

Occasionally thoughts more profound than, “What’s for dinner?” and , “Are you washing clothes tomorrow?” cross my mind. I visualize happenings such as running into an acquaintance who asks, “What do you think about eternity?” or, “What are we going to do about the at-risk dams around the country?” It’s at times like these that I remove my glasses, making sure I point at least one bow at the person who would dare ask such a question on a nice fall day, and reply, “Now there’s a question for one to ponder.” I do that in hopes that by the time I w...

  • Songs bring back memories

    Rex Clothier|Nov 23, 2017

The other day while working out, my attention was suddenly focused on an oldie/goldie, “Donna”, that brought into my memory the picture of a lowly junior boy falling in love for the first time with a popular senior girl who miraculously made a place in her heart for him - me - if only temporarily. It’s strange how things were going on in the world that were even more important than that cataclysmic event. For example, at the same time there was a leader coming to the fore that was in the process of beginning the battle to overthrow an autho...

  • Opportunities for all

    Rex Clothier|Nov 9, 2017

A couple of weeks ago, I penned a salute to the liberals who had promoted some of the minor things we have in our country such as free public education, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, women’s suffrage, Social Security, Medicare, etc. which occasioned a response that in point of fact, every thing from athletes foot to dandruff and everything in between was the fault of liberal foolishness. I felt rewarded that at least someone had actually read something I had written because truth be told, writers, no matter their degree of talent, c...
