  • Rational thinking needed in California

    Mike Pierce|Aug 30, 2018

Having toured much of the state recently, one can readily observe the pall of smoke blanketing our state from the (mostly) California wildfires. The wildfires, producing smoke, ash and other particulates, are one way that Mother Nature and Father Time redistribute the earth’s natural resources – just look at your windshield each morning to see the evidence of this redistribution. All that dust comes from somewhere, not just our often windy weather. Though tragic through the loss of life and property, the wildfires do have a beneficial eff...

  • Help a child by giving this Christmas

    Mike Pierce|Dec 14, 2017

This Christmas gift-giving season is winding down (less than two weeks before Christmas). The economy is finally improving, and the spirit of the season is reaching new highs (Black Friday, Small Town Saturday, Cyber Monday). With this improvement in spirit goes many opportunities to help our fellow community members. Our community is known for its spirit of helping others in need. Cookie jar auctions, chili dinners, Soup and Bread dinners at a local church, a food bank run by another church, and other activities are all aimed at helping each...

  • Words attributed to letter writer were not used

    Mike Pierce|Nov 16, 2017

I enjoy reading letters selected by the editor for printing in the Independent Record. Not all letters submitted are printed. Some letters contain factual errors which should be corrected. As the letter writer mentioned in Mr. Clothier’s most recent letter (the one who actually read his first letter), I must state that nowhere in my response to his first letter did I mention, as he put it, “every thing from athletes foot to dandruff and everything in between was the fault of liberal foolishness.” I guess Mr. Clothier was attempting to be humor...

  • Dream worlds of 'idealistic progressives'

    Mike Pierce|Oct 26, 2017

I read with amusement Mr. Clothier’s recent column detailing many of the wonderful things that “idealistic progressives” have put upon the country. Some are good and were needed. I am the beneficiary of the Social Security and Medicare programs, having dutifully participated (since the law required it) by contributing parts of my paychecks since 1966 to those programs. He even admits that being an idealistic progressive “…probably describes me.” (quote from his column) Unfortunately, the dream worlds of the idealistic progressives of the past...

  • Men of the NFL have shunned the nation

    Mike Pierce|Sep 7, 2017

As of this weekend, members of at least 16 teams – fully one-half of the NFL – have protested during the playing of the national anthem, by sitting, kneeling, eating, or raising a clenched fist. The respectful and patriotic practices of standing, covering your heart with your right hand or cap, and maybe even singing, were ignored by these “men.” It should be noted that these “men” collectively earn hundreds of millions of dollars each year playing a game, a game that is not played anywhere else professionally (as far as I know) except in Canad...

  • Intrigued by martial law concept

    Mike Pierce|Aug 3, 2017

I am intrigued by Hanes W. Hall’s letter, putting forth the concept of the possibility of the imposition of “martial law” by the president. Seems to be another unfounded (and confounding as well) conspiracy theory from a particular political party. Only the current president could impose a national system of “martial law.” I personally have heard nothing - zero, zip, nada - about the president even remotely considering such an action. And I’m curious, why would the president want to do that in the first place? For no reason that I can think o...

  • Trump won, get over it

    Mike Pierce|Nov 24, 2016

Referencing the recent Rex’s Ramblings column, it’s obvious on which side of the political aisle he stands. It’s obvious that the author still reads from the tired old Democrat playbook - the one Democrats relied on to defeat President-Elect Trump (oops, that didn’t work for them, did it?). The playbook that states it doesn’t matter if a charge is true or false, what’s important is the seriousness of the charge. Of course, as with all trumped-up charges brought to every election season in October by the Democrats, the charges have been proven...

  • If pay disparity bothers you, do something else

    Mike Pierce|Oct 13, 2016

I don’t argue with Cindy Glasson’s statistics in her column titled Wyoming, The Equality State. I do believe there’s a gender gap in pay between men and women. Statistics can be misleading. I’ve heard it said, for example, that two economists can analyze the same set of data (statistics) and come to opposite conclusions. For example, Obama says the economy is doing great - the unemployment rate, 4.9 percent (Bureau of Labor Statistics: http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000) is the lowest in many years. The same data shows 93 million...

  • What national law was being referred to?

    Mike Pierce|Sep 8, 2016

The Ask Around opinion article by April S. Kelley in the latest IR issue leaves no doubt as to which side of the fence she stands. But there are so many things in her column that are just so wrong, in my opinion. The phrase “separation of church and state” itself doesn’t appear in the United States Constitution. The First Amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Thomas Jefferson used the phrase in letters to others, but the phrase has no legality...

  • Punish everyone for one's mistake?

    Mike Pierce|Aug 25, 2016

There is no better example of the differences in ideology between the “common folk,” and those elected or appointed to serve those common folk, than the recent dispute about use (abuse) of the town dump. I reference two front page articles in the IR concerning this issue, one on Aug. 4 and the other on Aug. 18. The Assistant to the Mayor detailed this abuse, as a home owner demolished a house and sent 14 loads of construction debris to the dump, free of charge as a resident and not as a business operation. The Mayor put an exclamation poi...

  • Did the mountains come first or the river?

    Mike Pierce|Apr 21, 2016

Regarding Duane Richter's letter, I do not argue with or dispute anyone's religious beliefs. I do believe that religion and science are not mutually exclusive. You can believe that God created all things on His own time frame, and science mainly explains the what, where, when and how of what we can physically observe or theorize. No one on earth knows how long a Genesis "day" is when God created everything in six days (resting the seventh). It could be 24 hours or 24 million years. It is a scientific fact that the rotation rate of earth is...

  • Complaint not valid

Mike Pierce, Letter to the editor|Aug 13, 2015

Well, it seems there is at least one unhappy person in our community, someone who leads such a melancholy life that he/she can only attain satisfaction by spreading his/her misery to others, including our local businesses. This person sought to attack my employer by filing an anonymous (of course) complaint with the fire chief. This person hides behind the cloak of anonymity just as others have done recently through complaints on social media. Such brave people. The complaint was that my employer was creating the business’s main product u...
