SLIB approves funding for former airport property

Hot Springs County officials issued a press release on Monday regarding the Community Readiness grant application to prepare the former county airport property for development.

The property is located near the Thermopolis Golf Course, between Roundtop and T-Hill.

In November 2023, the Hot Springs County Commissioners submitted a Community Readiness grant application to the Wyoming Business Council (WBC) to prepare the former airport property for development.

The press release states, “The grant application included a request for funding of $1,277,895 from the WBC to remove and roto-mill the runway, remove all liabilities remaining on the site, prepare the site for development, and electrical infrastructure. The WBC recommended an additional $50,000 to conduct a feasibility study for the site.”

Regarding their plans, the county explains, “The County’s match for the grant consists of purchasing the adjacent land and constructing a new access road to the site which are considered in-kind, the County will also contribute a total of $239,577 for a cash match towards the total project cost.”

On April 4, at the Wyoming State Land and Investments Board (SLIB) meeting, the board approved funding for Hot Springs County Former Airport Property in the amount of $1,327,895, with the condition to conduct the feasibility study while removing the runway and building the access road, before further funding will be disbursed.

The apron and hangars will remain on site for the time being.

Regarding the roto-milled material, the county stated it will be transported to the Black Mountain Road project.
