Coming together

Monday marked the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people and injured more than 6,000 others in the worst attack against the USA in our nation’s history.

Many of us will never forget that tragic day or what we were doing when we heard the news. We hope the younger generation will never have to live through anything remotely similar.

Commemorations were held at the three attack sites — New York’s Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa. Across the country, memorials were held to commemorate the anniversary.

William Dawkins is shown on the front page of this paper memorializing the attacks by standing alert at the flag pole in downtown Thermopolis. The American Flags appearing in the background were put up by dedicated volunteers. Members of our volunteer fire department proudly displayed a large flag flying high held up with a ladder truck.

For many, the day was a reminder of how vital our national, state and community unity is. Following the attacks, we came together as a nation in a way that has since gradually disappeared.

Going forward, let’s work to renew our unity in one another.

United we stand, divided we fall.
