Letters to the Editor

We appreciate receiving letters to the editor and regard them as our readers’ opportunity to improve our community, express their beliefs and communicate through the Thermopolis Independent Record.

We want to give the people of Hot Springs County the opportunity to read those views as well as voice them.

Recently, some confusion has occurred regarding our letter to the editor policy. One letter writer believed there should be no policy and all letters should run regardless of length or content.

This editorial is to clarify our letter to the editor policy.

•All submitted letters must include the writer’s name, address, email address and/or phone number for verification purposes.

•Published letters will include the author’s name.

•Subject matter should be timely and of interest to our readers.

•Letters are limited to 400 words.

•Letters thanking specific businesses or individuals will not be published.

•Letters attacking specific businesses or individuals will not be published. Public figures can be named, however, the writer should make their point without getting offensive or attacking someone. Deal with the issue, not the personality.

•We reserve the right to edit and to accept or reject any letter.

•Publication is limited to one letter per author per 30 days.

The Independent Record is one of thousands of newspapers with a letter to the editor policy. Our policy is not exactly the same as every other newspaper, nor does it have to be.

If you are looking for a newspaper with no letter to the editor policy, it is not this one.

What we print on this page sets the tone for our office, our pages and our community. We prefer to set the bar high.
