Let's all get back on the same team

This election season certainly had an abundance of candidate to choose from, but with the increase of people running for office it seems the amount of mudslinging — in public, at forums and especially online — did as well. While that is typical of election season, there were some comments that stepped a bit too far over the line.

But, as of Tuesday, we made it. The votes were cast and most of the local positions have been decided. For those who won their races, best wishes to the coming years. For those who lost, I certainly hope you gained some valuable experience of what the political arena is all about and might consider running in the next one.

Whether your candidate won or not, keep in mind that the Primary is over and though disagreements and nasty comments are sure to continue it’s important to remember that we’re all on the same team of Thermopolis and Hot Springs County.

A good way to remember that is to rally as a community behind a common goal. This doesn’t have to be anything as far reaching as the possibility of using ground water or the renovation and remodel of Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital. One simple opportunity is coming up this Saturday as our boys take to the football field in a season-opening scrimmage against Shoshoni and Wind River.

Football not your thing? Take a trip to check out the cross-country team at the Kelly Walsh Invite this Friday or the golf team at the Weston County Invite in Newcastle this Thursday and Friday. Don’t like sports, there’s plenty other extracurricular activities our students will be involved in during the coming year and plenty opportunity to reconnect as a community.

Sure, the election did plenty to divide us and although it’s over some of the mud may take a while to rinse off. But when it comes down to it we’re still all on the same team, and we can’t let the election continue to divide us.
