Remember to renew tax exemptions

Hot Springs County Assessor Daniel Webber announced today that currently qualified Hot Springs County veterans or their surviving spouse should contact the Assessor’s Office by telephone to renew their Veteran’s Exemption for 2018 on their property taxes.

If applicants will be using the exemption for vehicle licensing, they will need to stop by the Assessor’s Office when they come in the courthouse to renew their registration. The exemption can only be used in one county in Wyoming for the tax year and if you are using it on your property taxes it can only be used on your principal residence.

Those honorably discharged veterans or surviving spouses who have not been remarried, who have never applied for the exemption and would like to apply will need to come to the Assessor’s Office and bring a copy of their military service discharge papers, also known as a DD form 214.

The veteran and/or surviving spouse must have been a resident of Wyoming for the three years prior to claiming the exemption and must meet at least one of the following criteria:

•Veteran must have received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or its equivalent

•Veteran must have been on active duty between Dec. 7, 1941 and Dec. 31, 1946, June 27, 1950 and Jan. 31, 1955 or Feb. 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975

•Veteran must have a service-connected disability certified by the veteran’s administration or a branch of the armed forces of the United States

The Assessor’s Office is located in the County Court House, 415 Arapahoe, and you can call 864-3414 or e-mail hsca@hscounty.com for more information.
