Project continues along 12th Street

Those who have driven along the south side of 12th Street near Candy Jack Park in the past several weeks have certainly noticed the orange detour signs diverting them around the gaping hole in the street.

Town Engineer Anthony Barnett said the valley pan of the street cracked during the winter as ice and water made its way into the ground, and the initial plan was to replace the concrete.

However, as additional water infiltrated, the sewer line either heaved, or settled, or a combination of the two, Barnett said, requiring work to get it flowing properly again. Though it is currently flowing well, Barnett said it is not up to the standards of the Department of Environmental Quality.

There was also investigation to check if there were additional areas of ponding that might require work, though it looks to be isolated to the one area.

Barnett said the work may have to go roughly 60 feet into Johnson Street to be completed. The ground will be raised up in order to secure the line. Following that the broken concrete will be dug up and replaced, as per the original plan. The completion date for the project will depend on availability of materials. Barnett noted the project will actually need some larger equipment, and the project finish date is dependent upon the availability of that equipment as well.
