Greek food comes to Thermop

The appearance of a food truck at an empty lot on Sixth Street over the past couple weeks has certainly drawn some attention. The vehicle is home to The Greek Station, owned and operated by husband and wife Georgios and Karine Takos.

Karine said before her husband started doing the food truck, he worked at a restaurant in San Diego, Calif., where she was also a teacher. He had previously taken the truck across the country, setting it up at concerts, events and other venues, and Karine said this was how he came to really know America. Born in northern Greece, where he lived with his mother and two sisters, Georgios came to this country about 30 years ago, around age 20.

Though he's been all over the country, from New York to California, Karine said her husband's favorite area is here in northern Wyoming, in part because the scenery and landscape reminds him of Greece, but also because the communities where they brought the truck were very supportive. Karine also was able to continue her teaching career, in Powell.

Thermopolis was recently added to the Station's list of stops, which also includes Powell, Lovell and Worland. Karine said Georgios takes a lot of pride in his cooking and doesn't let others do his job, and he loves visiting with his customers. In addition traditional Greek food like gyros, the menu includes more American offerings such as hamburgers and hot dogs.

During the summer, Karine said, they will try to get the truck here on Fridays, Saturday and Sunday, along with other days when they can. She noted some weekends are already booked.
