Dining with diabetes program

If you or a loved one suffers from diabetes, Hot Springs County Public Health, in association with the University of Wyoming Extension Service, will be hosting a series of cooking classes, “Dining with Diabetes.”

The program is designed to help those with Type 2 diabetes eat healthy while enjoying what they eat and better manage their diabetes.

There will be a series of four weekly classes with a follow-up class a couple of months later, featuring hands-on cooking.

There will be demonstrations and sampling of healthy foods, how to substitute ingredients to make recipes more healthy for diabetics, how to read labels at the grocery store and even some exercise tips to help keep your diabetes under control.

The first class will be a general overview of diabetes, the second class will concentrate on carbohydrates and sweeteners, the third covers fats and sodium while the fourth class will be all about vitamins, minerals and fiber.

There is a $25 fee for the program, which covers the cost of food and a diabetic cookbook. If a couple or two family members would like to participate, there is just a $5 fee for the second family member.

Classes will be held each Tuesday starting May 2 in the basement meeting room of Big Horn Federal. Class begins at 11 a.m.

To register for the class, please call public health at 864-3311.
