The wheels are turning

Among the biggest topics of discussion within the past week has certainly been the trial of Matthew Schwan, evidenced by the number of people attending as well as the explosion of comments on our Facebook page.

The trial was an emotional one for both sides — those supporting Matthew and the victim, Reilly Schwan — and the impact felt is far from over, and will likely see a fresh revival as the sentencing comes around.

Among the comments seen online, and heard at the trial, was with regard to justice finally coming to pass in this case. Often times, people become frustrated with the speed that justice is doled out, thinking things need to happen a bit quicker than is typical. But it’s this time that allows for gathering of evidence, issuing subpoenas for witnesses, motions to allow or quash evidence or testimony.

All of this goes to help the defense and the prosecution prepare and present their cases when the day(s) of trial eventually come around. The system helps to ensure fair trial for all, one of the foundations on which our country stands.

This past week has seen plenty of emotional outpouring with regard to the Schwan trial, and we would like our readers to keep in mind, whichever side of the fence they fall, to have respect for others when posting comments online, or visiting about the trial, the tragedy from last May and the legal processes following.

As for the weeks leading up to the sentencing, and the day itself, also try to keep in mind an admonishment from Judge Robert Skar, who asked family and friends from both sides to keep from emotional outbursts when the verdict was read. Truly, those on either side have seen trying times this past year, and will likely have more before this all comes to a close.

Though it might feel like they’re grinding slowly, even to the point of standstill, the wheels of justice are moving, and its important to keep in mind our words and actions might put up a roadblock whether we want it or not.
