Phipps memorial concert planned

The first Rick Phipps Memorial Concert is scheduled to take place this weekend.

John Brooks said Phipps, who passed away July 4 due to leukemia and other medical issues, was one of the favorites of the musicians group and someone he’s played with since 2005. The concert, a free-will donation event, was originally planned as a fundraiser for Phipps’ medical bills; now, donations will be accepted to assist his family.

The concert will feature musicians from Thermopolis and the surrounding area, including: Kerry Wallace and Cal Winland, Eric Kay, Dan Garnett, Silvertip String Band and Shawn Nicklas, Shawn McWilliams, Hub Whitt and others. Brooks noted there will be allotted time for each act, and though some might leave after they play those remaining will form one big band to close the night.

The concert will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17 at the Hot Springs State Park Pavilion, and is planned to go until 8:30 p.m. Brooks said there are future annual concerts already planned, with proceeds going to charities.

Those who would like to donate outside of the concert can contact Brooks at 921-9333.
