Music students perform in Denver

Last week, several of the Hot Springs County High School music students traveled for competition in Denver. The concert band earned a superior rating, concert choir earned an excellent rating, and the jazz band earned an excellent rating. Hot Springs County High School also earned the Espirit De Cor award for outstanding sportsmanship. This is the second time in 3 years the school has won this trophy. Courtney Yarrington also won a medal for outstanding jazz soloist.

On Friday, April 29, the Hot Spring County High School Concert Choir was selected to perform the Canadian and Unites States National Anthems at the Colorado Mammoth LaCrosse game at the Pepsi Center in Denver. There were over 15,000 people in attendance.

"The choir did amazing," Director Dustin Olsen stated. "I was so, so, so proud of their courage and musical ability. It was gut check time right before we walked out from the tunnel. When the lights went out and we heard 15,000 people screaming, that was one of the scariest moments of my life. After we finished and were walking out, the head of game entertainment pulled me aside and complemented the choir. She said that we were one of the best she has heard perform and then she invited us back next to perform a NBA game for the Denver Nuggets. She said that was by invitation only. I was honored and excited for the choir. We really do have some of the best students in the world."
