Lady Cats heat up at home invite

The Hot Springs County High School Lady Cats volleyball team is building on a string of huge wins that started Thursday against Rocky Mountain and continued through this weekend's Bobcat Invitational.

After a tactical lineup change by coach Shannon Hill, the Lady Cats came out of the gates Thursday with guns blazing and defeated Rocky Mountain in straight sets. "It was a great win for our girls.  We had 13 aces as a team including 8 from Maggie Ryan," said coach Hill. "The girls adjusted well to [the lineup change] and did a great job creating runs and staying on top of Rocky." Hill added that Ryan also led the team in digs with eight total, while Makayla George led the team with six kills.

The next day the Lady Cats come home to host the Bobcat Invitational where they experienced similar success. The Lady Cats bested their first opponent, Wheatland, 21-14 and 21-11. They moved on to play Saratoga who also fell victim to the Lady Cats rising momentum 21-15 and 21-6. The final action of the night on Friday saw the Lady Cats beat their third opponent, St. Stephens.

Saturday morning pitted the Lady Cats against Burlington, with the home team losing the first set 16-21, but regaining momentum to win the second set 21-17. The Lady Cats moved on to beat Riverside 21-3 and 21-15 before ending pool play with a win against Wyoming Indian 21-17 and 21-7.

The Lady Cats were seeded 3rd behind Shoshoni and Wind River after winning 11 of 12 sets during pool play. "My girls really played well together during pool play and stepped up on the defensive and offensive side of the game.  They looked like a well-oiled machine, talking and listening together," Hill said.

The Lady Cats ultimately ended the tournament with a four-loss set against Wind River that would have put them up against Shoshoni in the championship game. Maggie Ryan again led the Lady Cats in digs with 20, while her sister Mary led the team in kills with 6.

"We still have some bugs to fix but I am very proud of my team this weekend.  There were a lot of positive things that came out of the tournament," said Hill.

The Lady Cats will host Greybull this Friday.
