Bobcat Booster Club takes over 3-on-3

The fate of the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament was the main focus of discussion during last week’s chamber of commerce meeting.

A year ago, the chamber board discussed dropping the event as a fundraiser and were soon approached by the Bobcat Booster Club who wanted to take it over as their own fundraiser.

At the time, the chamber board offered to continue the event for one more year and were more than willing to mentor the booster club as to the ins and outs of running the tournament.

Working through World Events, the chamber held the tournament this spring. Final expenses have been calculated and the chamber made just $521.23 from the event in spite of hundreds of hours of work from volunteers and chamber staff.

The event itself has the least amount of board or community support of all the events the chamber sponsors and is not a large money maker, leaving them to wonder if it is even worth continuing.

In spite of offering to help the booster club learn how to do the tournament themselves, no one from the club came to help out during the tournament, prompting the chamber board to make a decision, voting not to sponsor the event in the future.

In speaking with the booster club earlier this week, they do intend to take the event over and have been having 3-on-3 committee meetings each month in preparation for next spring.

A date has not been set yet for the tournament, but will be continuing under the guidance of the Bobcat Booster Club.
