On the Record policy

It is the Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police calls” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Monday, May 4

1:41 Firefighters responded to a gas leak at 120 South Bar None Road.

Tuesday, May 5

4:56 Firefighters responded to a grass fire at 710 West Sunnyside lane.

Sheriff’s office

Tuesday, April 28

12:30 a.m. A family living on East Sunnyside were called by a possible telemarketer. The call was from a person saying they were with Dish Network and wanted the information off of the back of the family’s cable box.

The family said if the caller was with Dish, then they would already have that information. A family member then hung up and called Dish, who said that call was a scam. Giving the information out would have given that fake Dish caller access to their billing information.

6:49 p.m. Someone living in the Kirby area reported money stolen from their home. A deputy has interviewed people in the area and the incident is still under investigation.

9:10 p.m. Someone reported a person living out of their car in the Kirby area. The person was parked on private property. When deputies investigated, they found the man had permission to be on the private land.

Thursday, April 30

9:54 a.m. A harassment allegation in the Red Lane area is under investigation.

Friday, March 1

4:50 a.m. Paul Mathewson, 49, was arrested for possession of drugs.

Deanna Weber, 54, was arrested for possession of drugs.

8:10 a.m. An older man who was exercising his dog in the Kirby Loop said he was harassed when a person out there started yelling at him. The Sheriff has addressed the issue.

1:36 p.m. An accident was reported in front of Shopko. A pickup truck driving northbound in the outside lane was hit by a vehicle turning northbound. The vehicle crossed both lanes and struck the rear of the truck. The deputy assessed the vehicle as having less than $1,000 worth of damage.

Saturday, May 2

10:39 a.m. Kirby vacuum sales people were selling their wares in town with a permit. Because of their sales strategy, someone called them in as suspicious.

5:50 p.m. Deputies received a report of a vicious animal in the Kirby area. When a deputy arrived the animal was in the yard and not showing hostility. The owner is working to alleviate the problem.

Sunday, May 3

12:13 a.m. A door was found unsecured at the fairgrounds. The deputy found no damage and nothing was missing.

10:01 a.m. An alarm went off on Canyon Hills. It was a false alarm from the security company.

6:13 p.m. Deputies received a report of a possible drunk driver. The report came in from Washakie County of a driver who was weaving the vehicle through traffic. The vehicle never ended up in Hot Springs County.

Monday, May 4

10:30 a.m. A man reported he was scammed out of money. A caller contacted the man and claimed to be his grandson, locked up for driving under the influence in Las Vegas.

He said not to tell his parents, but that his lawyer would reach out to the grandfather. The grandfather later received a call from the alleged attorney. The attorney asked him to MoneyGram $1,500 for fees associated with the case. The man did.

The attorney then called again and said that he needed $2,000 more dollars. At this point someone pointed out to the man that he may be falling victim to a scam. The man called his grandson’s number, and the grandson confirmed he was not in jail.

10:53 p.m. There was a report of a theft on the north fork of Owl Creek. Buildings had been broken into during the winter. A deputy is investigating.

Tuesday, April 28

10:10 a.m. Police received a report of a nuisance property. When an officer spoke with the property owner, the owner said they would clean it up.

10:36 a.m. Police received a report of a nuisance property with old cars and miscellaneous items on property. When an officer spoke with the property owner, the owner said they would clean it up.

2:26 p.m. A family dispute was reported. The female’s family doesn’t like her boyfriend.

5:27 p.m. A person reported damage to a vehicle they had on their property. The person wasn’t sure when the damage had occurred.

6:55 p.m. Someone received a phone call from someone pretending to be Dish Network. They asked for the account number so they could upgrade them to HD TV. The person told the caller they weren’t interested because they already had HD TV.

Wednesday, April 29

9:38 p.m. Someone reported hearing loud noises. When an officer arrived, the noises had stopped.

Thursday, April 30

4:52 p.m. There was a false alarm at the County Museum.

Friday, May 1

12:06 p.m. Police received a barking dog complaint. An officer checked the scene and found no barking dog. When they went to the alleged home of the barking, they knocked on the door and the dog started barking again.

Saturday, May 2

8:05 p.m. A person reported a scam that occurred while they were trying to buy puppies online. The seller had them pay via MoneyGram and then refused to send the puppies until the buyer paid more money for their transportation.

Sunday, May 3

9:31 a.m. Someone reported the Kirby vacuum people as being suspicious because they were selling vacuums in the area.

11:16 a.m. Someone reported damage to their storage units. The damage was to the door and looked like something had slammed into it. Police believe there is approximately $300 worth of damage.

11:24 p.m. An adult female was walking home and stumbling. An officer recognized her as someone who was out on bond. She was stopped and had to submit to a sobriety test. Her blood alcohol level was at .143. The female was released and the report was sent to Probation and Parole.

Monday, May 4

2:27 a.m. An officer was sent to a possible domestic incident. A person had gone to an ex boyfriends home and damaged property. The person was also violating a trespass notice.

Lara Halbert, 33, was arrested for property damage and violating a trespass notice.

10:49 a.m. A parent calling the police reported her daughter was getting phone calls from someone who the parent thought was threatening. The caller had accused the daughter of hitting their car.

5:05 p.m. Someone reported that when filing their tax return it came back as already filed. The person wanted a record locally of the incident.

10:53 p.m. Someone reported a family fight. The caller said the couple had been fighting for an hour. When an officer arrived, the people said they had been arguing but they were done now.

11:43 p.m. Someone reported hearing noises, like a rivet gun. It turned out the noises were just a sprinkler hitting a building with water.

Circuit court

Lara Halbert’s bond was set at $2,500 following an arrest for breach of peace, public intoxication, property destruction and trespassing.

Deanna Weber had a signature bond set at $500 following her arrest for possession.

Paul Mathewson had his bond set at $10,000 cash only following his arrest for possession.

Patrick Lookingbill pleaded guilty to driving without registration, driving under suspension and speeding. He was given 180 days in jail, with 160 suspended and credit for nine days. He was given $611 in fines and fees, and six months of supervised probation.
