Hart qualifies in two state track events

Spring track can be filled with highs and lows, and last weekend's meet for the Bobcats is a good example of some things going very right and others going very wrong.

The Cats were in Riverton on Saturday for the Roy Peck Invitational and head coach Ernie Mecca said there were some absolutely joyous celebrations during the day, but also some grave concerns.

On the boys team, Jacob Hart posted two automatic qualifiers for the state meet a mere week after being involved in an accident.

"(For Jacob) to have two automatic qualifiers and set two personal records a week later is great," Mecca said.

However, the boys are still fighting two significant injuries with Dominick Jensen and Tyler Cornwell, both of whom have hamstring pulls.

"They're both potential placers at state," Mecca said. "There's no set time when an injury like that will heal up. It's different for everyone. Athletes who do springs and jumps have a longer healing time, and that's what we're looking at with both these boys."

Cornwell started his day with the long jump, placing fifth with a 19'1" leap, but unfortunately, he pulled his hamstring during the jump, forcing him to scratch the rest of his events for the day.

Mecca is enthusiastic about the remainder of the season, though.

"We had a good day," he said. "There were some concerns, but you take the good with the bad and keep moving. We broke seven personal records and had several qualifiers. We have a couple who are close to breaking school records, too."

Mecca said the boys and girls teams are both in the hunt to have a top three finish at state.

The team will be in Riverside on Friday for their next meet.
