    Rex Clothier, Guest Reporter|Feb 25, 2016

by Rex Clothier The 2A West Regional Wrestling Tournament was held at Rocky Mountain High School in Cowley on Friday. Twelve teams competed to see how many of their wrestlers could qualify for state competition. Qualifying 11 Bobcats for the upcoming Wyoming State Wrestling Tournament on March 26-27 put a smile on Coach CJ Scholl's face, but his words were cautionary. "We have to wrestle better there than we did at regionals," said Scholl. "It almost seemed that our kids qualified for state and...

  • Boys need win at Shoshoni Friday

    Rex Clothier, Guest Reporter|Feb 18, 2016

When the Bobcats visited the top ranked 1A defending state champion Burlington Huskies Friday, coach Kevin Gerber was well aware the Bobcats were facing a good team, a very good team. Fifty-two points later, all the statistics of the game pointed to a Thermopolis victory except the scoreboard which showed the Huskies with 54. Keegan Robbins with 22 rebounds nearly exceeded the entire Burlington squad's 26. Only nine turnovers were suffered by the Bobcats. Both teams hit 50 percent of their free...

Last Friday an activities bus carrying the Bobcat boys basketball team left HSCHS with the passengers knowing they had a tough task in front of them - win the next two games and guarantee entry in the regional tournament without going through a "pigtail" qualifying game. The first obstacle, Riverside, had fallen to the Bobcats by 18 points earlier in the season, and the Bobcats were heavily favored to defeat the scrappy but thin Rebels on their own floor. At the end of the first quarter, coach K...

    Rex Clothier, Guest Reporter|Feb 11, 2016

A busy week tested Thermopolis wrestlers as they hosted a quadrangle with Worland, Douglas and Lovell on Thursday, and a trip to Riverton to participate in the tournament most wrestling people in Wyoming consider the true individual state championship meet - The Ron Thon Invitational. Thursday the Bobcats wrestled both Douglas and Worland in successive matches. Douglas overpowered the Bobcats to the tune of 49-18 with only Tom Severns and Cullen Becher winning via pins. The boys Bobcat basketball team enter this week's upcoming action with Riverside and Greybull with an 0-3 record in conference after tough losses at Rocky Mountain Thursday and with visiting Shoshoni Saturday. Coach Kevin Gerber remarked, "All conference games are important, but now they are really important if we don't want to have to play a "pigtail game" to get into the regional tournament." "In the 44-42 loss at Rocky Mountain Thursday, Tyler Cornwell had an outstanding all-around game. He...

  • Sophomores step up

    Rex Clothier|Jan 28, 2016

Occasionally a situation in high school sports arises that calls participants to a higher performance standard than usually is the case. Sophomore Bobcats competing in wrestling are in that situation this year. There are no juniors out for the sport, and there are only two seniors. Assuming that mid-school wrestlers will continue in the sport at the high school level, there will be between 15 and 20 freshmen/sophomore wrestlers in the room at the start of the 2016-17 season. Leadership will be vested in the returning juniors: Cullen Becher, Mil...

  • Bobcat wresting team struggles in Douglas

    Rex Clothier|Jan 14, 2016

Bobcat wrestlers journeyed to Douglas for the Shane Shatto Invitational Friday and Saturday. It became clear this young team has a ways to go to compete successfully in tournaments where seven of the top ten teams were from 4A schools. Even usually powerful Douglas could finish no better than sixth. Bright spots in earning Thermopolis’ 25 points were the Becher boys with Cullen leading the way to a fifth place medal with three victories while brother Ethan scored a pin and a technical fall just missing the consolation placing round. Also adding...

  • Wrestlers hit the mats

    Rex Clothier|Jan 7, 2016

The Bobcats head wrestling coach C.J. Scholl said he breaks the season into thirds. The first third ends with the Christmas break. That was a period when the coaches could make an assessment of the pluses and minuses of each individual athlete and develop a plan for the development of the skills they’ll need to be as successful as possible. The second third starts now. Each wrestler will have “tweaks” to practice for the final third of the season which starts immediately after the Ron Thon in Riverton and concludes with the regional and state...

  • Day trips abound from Thermopolis

    Rex Clothier|Jun 25, 2015

“I’m bored. Think of something to do.” If these words ever should jump from your lips to your spouse’s ear, make sure your lips are somewhere far removed from such ear. Be aware that the number of possible outcomes from such a question are severely limited to generally two possibilities. One, she/he will simply say some variation of “I’m not the one bored. You think of something”, or 2) There’s a knitting contest at the senior center (Chinese checker open competition at same) that should prove interesting. Thankfully, we live in an area of t...
